The Dhaka district administration has formally handed over 36.7180 acres of land in Keraniganj to advance plans for a new economic zone backed by Hong Kong-based textile and garment manufacturer Handa Company.

Dhaka Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanam handed over possession of the land to Shaheen Akter Sumi, Director of Invest Bangladesh, at the designated site beside the New Bridge in Sonakanda BSCIC Industrial Estate, Ruhitpur Union. A compensation cheque was also handed to Md Rashed, an affected landowner.

Handa Company plans to establish the facility through Handa (Dhaka) Textile Company Limited, with an estimated investment of US$250 million. The project is expected to create employment for around 25,000 people and boost the local economy, alongside increasing the country’s textile and ready-made garment production capacity.

The company operates in knitting, fabric dyeing and ready-made garment manufacturing.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Farida Khanam said, “Economic zones play an important role in industrialisation, attracting domestic and foreign investment, and creating employment in the country. If Handa Company’s proposed investment in Keraniganj is realised, it will open up new prospects for industry and commerce in the region.”

The land has been allocated under the project titled “Construction of an Economic Zone in Keraniganj Upazila by BEZA”. The estimated cost of the project is Tk 210.69 crore.
