Grameenphone (GP) has inaugurated Bangladesh’s largest data centre solar power plant in Sylhet as part of its efforts to cut carbon emissions by 50 per cent by 2030.

The 325-kilowatt-peak (kWp) installation at its Sylhet Data Centre comprises 450 high-efficiency solar panels and is expected to generate more than 300 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, according to a company press release issued on Thursday.

The plant is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 188 tonnes a year, contributing to GP’s emissions reduction target against its 2019 baseline.

Developed by GP with Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE as its engineering, procurement and construction contractor, the project will supply renewable electricity to the data centre.

ZTE Bangladesh CEO Mao Junyong said the project demonstrated the potential of renewable energy to improve the efficiency of data centres.

“We believe this collaboration will set an example for the industry and contribute to building a greener and more sustainable digital future for Bangladesh,” he said.

GP Chief Technology Officer Abul Kasem Mohiuddin Al-Amin, Chief Financial Officer Otto Magne Risbakk and Chief Marketing Officer Farha Naz Zaman attended the inauguration.
