Manchester United’s poor start to the Premier League season continued on Sunday as they drew 1-1 with Leeds United at Elland Road.
Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead in the first half, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored after the break to earn Leeds a point.
The result increased the pressure on United manager Michael Carrick, whose side have won just once in their opening seven league matches.
United have also gone six matches without a victory in all competitions. They remain in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
The visitors had a chance to take control of the match before the break, but Mbeumo missed a good opportunity when he headed wide despite having plenty of space.
United goalkeeper Senne Lammens also played an important role in keeping the scores level. He made a fine save to deny Nico Elvedi, who directed a header towards goal.
Mbeumo eventually broke the deadlock when he met a low cross from Youri Tielemans. The forward got past James Justin before sending the ball into the net.
Carrick celebrated the goal with a punch of his fist as United looked to end their poor run.
However, Leeds fought back after the interval.
Calvert-Lewin showed his strength inside the penalty area and beat Carlos Baleba and Mbeumo to the ball following a corner. He then scored to bring the home side level. Both teams pushed for another goal, but clear chances remained limited.
Leeds came close to taking all three points in added time when Anton Stach had an opportunity to score. However, United survived the late pressure.
Carrick introduced Matheus Cunha in place of Tielemans during the closing stages, but the change failed to produce a winning goal. The draw leaves United with plenty of questions to answer after another disappointing performance.
Their poor league form has already left them five points behind the Champions League places. Carrick now faces an important week as he tries to turn the team’s season around.
United will travel to Italy to face Como in the Champions League before returning home to play Bournemouth in the Premier League. With only one league victory so far, Carrick will be desperate to see his side return to winning ways.
Leeds, meanwhile, will take confidence from their performance after recovering from a goal down to secure a point against their rivals.
