Bangladeshi band About Dark has released a new song, ‘Nirakar’, using music to challenge attempts to silence people, suppress questions and erase individual identity.

The track was released on the band’s official YouTube channel on 17 October. Through the song, the band seeks to highlight freedom of expression, human rights and the power of protest in Bangladesh and beyond.

‘Nirakar’ explores human helplessness and the longing to reclaim a lost sense of existence, freedom and life. Its lyrics question systems of power and imposed values that pressure people to follow prescribed rules rather than trust their own thoughts and conscience.

One line from the song, “Mukhoshdharider ashroye tumi nirbhul chetonay jibon shajao”, points to authority hidden behind masks and the values imposed on individuals. The lyrics suggest that, while trying to meet social expectations, people can gradually surrender their ability to question and resist.

Another line, “Niyom gorar utshobe tumi aaj nirbikar nirakar”, uses the idea of becoming ‘Nirakar’—formless—as a metaphor for losing one’s identity.

People may continue to live, yet find themselves unable to express their feelings, opinions and beliefs freely. When fear overpowers the courage to speak the truth and space for dissent shrinks, silence can begin to feel like the safest option.

The song therefore moves beyond personal disappointment or failure.

It asks listeners to consider how much freedom a person retains when they are separated from their own identity, independent thought and right to speak.

About Dark began its journey in 2016. Its previous releases include ‘Kono Mohe’ in 2018, ‘Tumi’ and ‘Kalo Manush’ in 2019, and ‘Line’ in 2025. The band became a member of the Bangladesh Musical Bands Association (BAMBA) in 2021.

The current line-up features Moon on vocals, Nasir Ullah Chhutti and Arfan Ahmed Purn on guitars, Adnan Ahmed Firoz on bass and Zakir on drums.

The band has no immediate plans to release a full-length album. Instead, its members hope to perform at more shows and bring their music directly to audiences.

About Dark may therefore become a more regular presence on stage in the coming days.
