A bus belonging to Jagannath University (JnU) was damaged in a fire at a garage in the Matuail Madrasa Bazar area of Demra in the capital around 11:30 am on Sunday.
The bus, named ‘Nongor’, caught fire after flames spread from a nearby Banasree Paribahan bus undergoing welding work.
No casualties were reported as nobody was inside the university bus at the time.
According to preliminary reports, the fire broke out during welding work on the Bonosree Paribahan bus before spreading to the roof of the JnU vehicle.
JnU Transport Administrator Professor Tarek Bin Atique told TIMES that the university bus had been taken to the garage on Saturday for denting and painting work.
He said the fire broke out on Sunday while work was being carried out on another vehicle, damaging the university bus. Those concerned had assured the university that they would compensate for the damage, he added.
Meanwhile, Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (Jaksu) Transport Secretary Mahid Hasan visited the scene and spoke to garage workers.
The workers said they had tried to extinguish the fire with the help of local residents. They also attempted to move the university bus out of the garage but were unable to do so because the gate was closed.
