Two five-month-old twin girls were found dead in a pond adjacent to their home in Munshiganj’s Srinagar upazila on Monday night.
The deceased infants, Lamia and Samiha, were daughters of Sohag Sheikh (28) and Shanta Begum (24) of Bibandi area. The twins’ uncle, Sakib Sheikh, discovered their bodies around 8:30 PM in a nearby pond and rushed them to a local hospital.
Their parents have been detained for questioning after family members accused them of murder.
According to the twins’ uncle Sakib, he heard shouting from Sohag’s house and rushed over, where Shanta claimed her husband had thrown the children into the pond. The babies were later recovered and taken to Srinagar Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.
Emergency unit physician Dr Cynthia Noor confirmed that both children were brought in well after they had died.
Srinagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Nazmul Huda Khan stated that preliminary suspicion points toward the parents. “Both the father and mother have been detained for questioning. Legal proceedings are underway,” he said.
Family members have demanded a thorough investigation, calling the deaths a tragic and deliberate act. The case has sparked grief and outrage in the local community.
