A union parishad (UP) member was killed after being attacked by rivals in Harinakundu Upazila of Jhenaidah on Wednesday night.

Monayem Hossain, a member of Ward No 9 of Vayna Union Parishad, died at a hospital in Kushtia after sustaining serious injuries in the attack.

The incident took place around 8:30pm in the Vayna Bazar area of the upazila.

Monayem, son of late Abul Mondol of Kalishankarpur village under Vayna Union, was also the ward president of the activities-banned Awami League.

According to police and local residents, Monayem was standing near a school at Vayna Bazar when several unidentified attackers allegedly swooped on him and hacked him with sharp weapons.

Hearing his screams, locals rushed to the spot and rescued him before taking him to Kushtia Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead after arrival.

His body has been kept at the hospital morgue.

Harinakundu Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Masum Khan said the identities of those involved in the attack had not yet been confirmed.

“Primary suspicion is that people from his rival group carried out the attack over a previous dispute. We are investigating the incident,” he said.

The OC added that legal action would be taken after completion of the autopsy once the body is brought back from Kushtia Medical College Hospital.
