Two people, a housewife and a businessman, were injured in separate shooting incidents in the capital’s Darus Salam and Shanir Akhra neighbourhoods on Saturday night. Both are currently hospitalised at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Housewife shot in Darus Salam
In the Madbarbari area of Darus Salam, a 38-year-old woman named Jiyasmin Akhter was shot and injured through a window. The incident occurred at around 8:15pm on Saturday in a rented tin-shed house located near the Darus Salam Madbarbari Mosque.
The victim’s son, Md Majidul Islam Yasin, said his mother was alone in the house at the time. She was watching television with the room lights switched off, but the window was left open. Suddenly, an unidentified assailant fired a shot through the open window and fled.
Upon receiving the news, Yasin rushed to the house, rescued his mother, and initially took her to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. She was subsequently transferred and admitted to DMCH.
According to Yasin, his mother sustained a bullet wound to her right arm. The family is unaware of who carried out the attack or the motive behind it.
Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, In-charge of the Dhaka Medical Police Camp, cited doctors stating that the injured woman is receiving emergency medical treatment. The incident has been reported to the Darussalam Police Station.
Jiyasmin’s husband, Abdul Mannan, works as a day labourer, while she is a housewife.
Businessman shot in Shanir Akhra
In a separate incident on the same night, a businessman named Aslam Khan, 38, was shot and injured by miscreants inside his business establishment on Zia Smaroni Road in Shanir Akhra, Kadamtali.
The shooting occurred at around 8pm on Saturday.
The victim’s cousin, Md Miraj Khan, stated that they reside in the Shanir Akhra area and that Aslam operates a crockeries business on Zia Sarani Road.
On Saturday night, Aslam was speaking with a customer inside his shop when a man entered and shot directly at him. Aslam was struck by bullets in his left arm and right cheek.
He was initially taken to a local hospital before being shifted to DMCH in an injured state. His relatives could not provide any reason for the shooting.
However, residents managed to apprehend the shooter as he attempted to flee the scene.
Kadamtali Police Station OC (Investigation) Sajib Kumar Barai confirmed the incident, stating that the businessman was shot on Zia Sarani and sent to DMCH.
He added that police have detained one individual along with a firearm and ammunition, and efforts are underway to uncover the full details of the incident.
