A police officer was killed and nine others injured when a police van overturned while trying to avoid hitting a child in Madaripur Sadar upazila on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Abdus Salam, a police officer. He died on the spot.
The accident took place around 3pm in the Mather Bazar area, according to police and local sources.
Local residents rescued the injured police personnel and took them to Madaripur Sadar Hospital for treatment.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Farhiha Rafique Bhavna said the police van lost control and overturned as the driver attempted to save a child crossing the road.
Those who sustained serious injuries were later sent to Dhaka for better treatment, the ASP added.
