Bangladesh have suffered an injury blow ahead of the Women’s Asia Cup, with fast bowler Fariha Islam Trisna ruled out of the tournament and the upcoming Asian Games.
Trisna picked up a hamstring injury during a training session a few days ago. She continued to experience pain, prompting the team management to send her for a scan. The examination revealed a Grade 2 tear, with her recovery expected to take between four and six weeks.
As a result, Trisna will miss Bangladesh’s Asia Cup campaign in Dubai as well as the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The Bangladesh Cricket Board are now considering her replacement, with Farzana Yasmin Medha understood to be in line for a call-up.
Bangladesh are scheduled to begin their Asia Cup campaign against Indonesia on August 31. They will then face defending champions Sri Lanka on September 6 before meeting hosts the United Arab Emirates in their final Group B match on September 8.
Sri Lanka, the UAE and Indonesia join Bangladesh in Group B, while Group A features seven-time champions India, Pakistan, Thailand and Hong Kong.
The top two teams from each group will reach the semi-finals, which are scheduled for September 10 and 11. The final will be played on September 13, with all matches taking place at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
The Asia Cup will run from August 28 to September 13, marking Bangladesh Women’s return to competitive cricket following a break after the T20 World Cup.
Nigar Sultana Joty’s side will then travel to Japan for the Asian Games. Their higher ranking means Bangladesh have been given a direct place in the quarter-finals, where they will face China at Korogi Athletic Park on September 17.
If Bangladesh win, they will meet either India or Japan in the semi-finals.
