A Dhaka court on Monday placed Sohel Rana on a two-day remand in connection with murder of his wife, Sara Roksana Pinu, a dentist, in Dhaka’s Faydabad area of Dakshinkhan.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid passed the order following a hearing, as confirmed by SI Abu Bakar Siddique of the prosecution.
The investigation took a significant turn when Criminal Investigation Department (CID) crime scene unit identified a shoe print on interior balcony, adjacent to a window where the grill had been cut.
Investigators found that the print matched a pair of shoes belonging to the victim’s husband, Sohel Rana, which were found inside the house.
Initially, it was suspected that attackers had entered the residence by cutting window grill to kill the doctor and loot the premises. However, following forensic discovery, Rana was arrested as a suspect.
Sohel Rana, who serves as an assistant manager at a real estate firm in Sector 7 of Uttara West, was produced in court on Saturday by the investigating officer, SI Habibur Rahman of Dakshinkhan Police Station.
On that day, Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat sent him to jail and scheduled remand hearing for Monday.
During Monday’s proceedings, defence lawyer Shahabuddin Sheikh moved a petition seeking bail and cancellation of remand plea. The court granted two-day remand after hearing both sides.
According to case documents, on the day of the incident, Rana left for his office at 11:30am after dropping his daughter at school, leaving Dr Pinu alone in the house. In the afternoon, the daughter returned home alone after no one arrived to collect her.
Finding the door ajar, she entered the house to find her mother lying motionless on a bed. After removing a pillow from her mother’s face and receiving no response, she returned to her school and contacted her father using the principal’s mobile phone.
Dr Pinu’s body was recovered last Thursday from their residence in Jamtala Gali, Faydabad. Following the incident, the victim’s sister, Sara Sultana Poly, filed a murder case against unidentified individuals at Dakshinkhan Police Station on Friday.
