Traffic police on Saturday detained a 20-year-old man and recovered a foreign-made pistol and a magazine following a car chase in the capital’s Gabtoli area of Dhaka.
The detainee was identified as Sajjad Hossain Ashik.
The incident occurred at around 6:40am on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway near Gabtoli Bus Terminal, according to the Traffic-Mirpur Division.
Police said Sergeant Aniruddha signalled a speeding sports car to stop for a routine check. However, the driver failed to produce the vehicle’s documents and attempted to flee.
The sergeant pursued the car on his motorcycle and, with the help of local people, managed to stop it.
During a search, police recovered the pistol and magazine from Ashik, who was sitting beside the driver.
The driver, however, managed to speed away during the commotion. Ashik was later handed over to Darus Salam Police Station.
Police said legal action was under way.
