Portugal have appointed Jorge Jesus as their new head coach after the team’s early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the appointment on Friday, only days after Roberto Martinez left the job. Martinez stepped down after Portugal lost 1-0 to Spain in the round of 16. The Spaniard said his contract ended after the defeat.
Jesus, 71, returns to lead the national team after a long coaching career in club football. He managed several top Portuguese clubs, including Benfica and Sporting.
His most recent job was with Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr. He guided the club to the league title in the 2025-26 season.
Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed an excellent campaign under Jesus at Al Nassr. The Portugal captain scored 29 goals in 33 matches last season.
Ronaldo, 41, has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup was the last of his career. However, he has not yet announced whether he will retire from international football.
Jesus now takes charge as Portugal begin a new chapter following their disappointing World Cup campaign.
