The government has officially declared two new river ports on the banks of Jamuna to enhance river communication in the northern region, expand passenger services, and develop port-based infrastructure.
The Ministry of Shipping’s T branch issued two separate notifications on Wednesday formally gazetting the Sariakandi River Port in Bogura district and the Dhunat River Port in the Bogura-Sirajganj region.
According to the notifications, the boundaries of these ports have been established under the powers conferred by the Port Act, 1908, to enforce relevant laws in the designated areas.
As per the gazette, the northern boundary of the Sariakandi River Port extends from Dighapara Ghat of Hatsherpur Union, north of Kalitala Ghat in Sariakandi Upazila, to Jamthol Ghat of Kazla Union on the eastern bank of Jamuna.
Its southern boundary stretches from Madhurapara Ghat of Kornibari Union to Mulbari in Narpala Mouza on eastern bank.
For Dhunat River Port, the northern boundary commences from Madhurapara Ghat area of Kornibari Union in Sariakandi Upazila.
The southern boundary is fixed at Beshagir Char of Chaubar Mouza in Bhatarbari Union under Dhunat Upazila of Bogura, via Jamuna River adjacent to Tekuria Hat in Kazipur, Sirajganj.
In both cases, the port limits include an area extending 50 yards inland from the maximum water level during normal high tide on both the eastern and western banks of the river.
The Sariakandi River Port will encompass existing canals and ghats, including Dighapara, Kalitala, Madhurapara, Jamthol, and Sonadga Ghat. Similarly, Chandaibaisa and Shahrabari Ghat, along with existing canals and ghats, are included under Dhunat River Port.
The notifications further specified that any existing institutions within these port boundaries will be considered cancelled to ensure the development of waterways, construction of jetties and other infrastructure, and the provision of passenger services.
