Police on Friday arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly sexually assaulting a six-year-old child in the capital’s Gulistan area.
The arrestee, identified as Riyad Gazi, hails from Chandpur Sadar upazila.
The incident took place early Friday morning at Matiur Rahman Park in Gulistan. According to police, the victim’s family resides in the Gulistan area; her father sells water and her mother sells pens on the street.
The child reportedly became separated from her mother around 3:30am while they were crossing the road near the park. Her parents began searching for her immediately after the disappearance.
Tushar Debnath, a Sub-Inspector (SI) of Paltan Police Station, said locals caught Riyad red-handed while he was attempting to rape the child in a corner of the park. The suspect was given a mass beating by the locals before being handed over to the Ahad Police Box at approximately 7:30am.
Police later took the suspect into custody and shifted the child to the One-Stop Crisis Center (OCC) at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The victim’s father has filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. The arrestee will be produced before a court as investigations into the matter continue
