Shuttle train services at Chittagong University (CU) were suspended on Wednesday afternoon after heavy rainfall caused severe waterlogging and fallen trees blocked parts of the railway tracks.

The suspension of the university’s main transport service left hundreds of students travelling between the campus and Chattogram city facing severe difficulties.

CU Assistant Proctor Kamrul Hossain confirmed the disruption at around 6:30pm, saying several sections of the railway tracks had been submerged by floodwater. He said two shuttle trains were stranded earlier in the afternoon as weather conditions deteriorated.

Amid the transport crisis caused by the adverse weather, the university authorities postponed all scheduled classes and examinations for Wednesday. The decision was announced in a notice signed by Acting Registrar Professor Mohammad Saiful Islam at 7:30am.

“Shuttle services will resume once the water recedes and the fallen trees are removed from the tracks,” Dr Hossain said.

However, he added that it was not possible to confirm when services would resume as it depended on the improvement of the overall situation. Chattogram has witnessed continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days, causing widespread waterlogging across different parts of the port city.

University authorities said shuttle trains would return to their normal schedule once weather conditions improve and the damaged transport links are restored.
