Police have arrested a fugitive security guard from Rangpur and recovered nearly Tk15 lakh stolen from an ATM booth in Sitakunda.
The operation, conducted under the guidance of Chattogram District Superintendent of Police Masud Alam, and led by Sitakunda Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohinul Islam, resulted in the recovery of Tk14,84,828 from the suspect’s possession.
The accused, identified as Aiyub Ali, 56, was apprehended following an intensive investigation that utilised technology-based tracking and inter-district coordination.
Alongside the stolen cash, police seized the mobile phone used by the suspect and the clothing he wore during the commission of the crime.
According to police investigations, the incident occurred on the afternoon of 24 June at International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC) fee collection ATM booth, which operates under Chawkbazar branch of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC.
Taking advantage of a brief period when the officer-in-charge had locked the booth to go outside, Ali allegedly used a pre-planned duplicate key to enter and steal Tk17 lakh from cash drawer.
The theft was discovered when the officer returned, and the matter was immediately reported to the police. A rigorous investigation followed, involving the analysis of CCTV footage, mobile phone data, and intelligence gathering.
To evade arrest, Ali reportedly changed his location multiple times, fleeing first to Cox’s Bazar and later to Rangpur, where he was eventually caught.
Aiyub Ali, the son of Sabir Ahammad and Moriyom Begum, is a resident of Baidyerghona, Jadipahar road in Cox’s Bazar Sadar. He had been serving as a security guard at the booth for approximately one and a half years.
The suspect has been produced before the court. A case has been registered at Sitakunda Police Station and further investigation is currently underway.
