The Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has initiated a major step towards transforming the district into a smart city with the proposal of two technology-based projects worth approximately Tk662 crore.
The initiatives are designed to reduce traffic congestion, enhance public safety, and modernise urban services through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), smart cameras, automated traffic signals, and solar-powered infrastructure.
Mayor Shahadat Hossain said technology is indispensable for modern city management, noting that these projects aim to make Chattogram a cleaner, greener, safer, and smarter city.
Addressing one of the city’s most pressing issues, the CCC has proposed an AI-based Smart Traffic System at a cost of Tk2.17 billion.
Under this scheme, smart traffic signals, monitoring cameras, number plate recognition systems, and red-light violation detectors will be installed at 56 key intersections and busy thoroughfares, all linked to a central control system.
The AI system is expected to monitor traffic conditions in real time and automatically adjust signal timings based on vehicle volume to improve flow.
CCC officials noted that the system will also assist traffic police by identifying rule violators and enabling more effective road management.
A second project, valued around Tk4.45 billion, focuses on strengthening urban security. This involves the installation of solar-powered smart LED streetlights, CCTV cameras, and electronic display boards along 130 kilometres of roads.
According to officials, the central surveillance network will allow real-time monitoring of important areas, helping authorities quickly detect crimes, accidents, robberies, and other incidents.
The technology will extend beyond traffic and security; the CCC plans to use the system to monitor waterlogging, blocked drains, and waste management. This real-time data will allow city authorities to respond more promptly to civic problems. The transition to solar-powered streetlights is expected to significantly reduce electricity consumption.
Mayor Shahadat highlighted that the new system could cut electricity costs by 70 to 75 per cent while promoting renewable energy and environmentally friendly urban development.
The projects are currently at the planning stage and will be revised based on recommendations from relevant government agencies.
