Lionel Messi believes four countries will enter the 2026 World Cup in stronger form than defending champions Argentina national football team. The Argentina captain named France, Spain, Brazil and Portugal among the leading contenders for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Messi shared his views in an interview with Argentine journalist Polo Alvarez before the tournament starts on 11 June. The 2022 World Cup winner said Argentina still carried quality, but other teams currently looked sharper and more settled.
“We have to admit some other teams are in better form than us and they will go in as favourites,” Messi said.
The France national football team drew special praise from the Inter Miami forward. Messi pointed to France’s depth and consistency since the last World Cup in Qatar, where Didier Deschamps’ side reached the final before losing to Argentina on penalties.
“France are very strong right now. They have many top-level players,” Messi said.
Messi also highlighted Spain national football team after their recent international performances. Spain rebuilt their squad over the last two years and added pace and directness in attack. Messi believes that progress places them among the strongest sides heading into 2026.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also backed Brazil national football team despite their uneven form in recent years.
“Brazil have not been at their best for some time, but they are always strong contenders,” he said.
Messi included Portugal national football team in the same group. He said Portugal now carried enough quality and experience to challenge any top nation.
Argentina will defend the title they won in Qatar in 2022. The tournament could also mark Messi’s final appearance on football’s biggest stage.
