MGH Group is set to develop a Tk550 crore container terminal at Chattogram Port, marking a major milestone in Bangladesh’s maritime and logistics sector.
The agreement for the privately financed project was signed on Monday between MGH Group and the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) at the CPA boardroom, in the presence of CPA Chairman Rear Admiral Moniruzzaman and MGH Group CEO Anis Ahmed, along with other stakeholders.
The terminal, to be developed on seven acres of land in the Laldia area, will feature a 250-metre-long jetty capable of accommodating container vessels with a draft of up to 10 metres. Once operational, the facility is expected to handle around 40,000 TEUs per month, with a static capacity of approximately 3,500 TEUs.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Anis Ahmed said the land was secured on a 20-year lease through an open tender. The terminal will be equipped with three gantry cranes and is expected to be completed within 18 to 20 months.
He added that the investment will primarily come from the company’s own funds, although bank financing may also be considered. Drawing on MGH Group’s 34 years of experience in shipping—particularly in container liner agency services—he expressed confidence in competing with existing operators at the port.
According to MGH group, the project, branded as the “MGH Terminal,” is being positioned as Bangladesh’s first private container terminal and a “green port,” incorporating environmentally sustainable technologies.
These include fully electric prime movers and container handling equipment, solar-powered systems, and energy-efficient infrastructure. Officials estimate the facility could reduce carbon emissions by around 2,700 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
Strategically located near the river mouth, the terminal is expected to significantly cut vessel turnaround time, allowing ships to berth within about 30 minutes compared to nearly two hours at existing jetties. The efficiency could save between 0.6 and 1.3 tonnes of fuel per vessel call, lowering costs for shipping lines.
MGH Group, which operates in 26 countries, aims to leverage its global network to attract foreign direct investment through the terminal. The project is also expected to generate substantial employment and strengthen Bangladesh’s supply chain capacity.
CPA Chairman described the initiative as a landmark development for the maritime industry.
“The MGH Terminal represents a strategic integration of private sector efficiency and green technology. It will set new benchmarks in vessel turnaround and environmental responsibility, ultimately strengthening Bangladesh’s position in global trade,” he said.
The MGH Terminal is expected to play a key role in enhancing the efficiency, sustainability, and competitiveness of Bangladesh’s import-export operations, signaling a new chapter in the country’s maritime logistics sector.
