A court has sent former Director General of the Defence Intelligence Directorate (DGFI), Lieutenant General (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled Chowdhury, to jail in a case filed over the attack on BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan and the killing of party activist Mokbul.
The order was given by the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam in Dhaka on Monday.
After the remand period ended on the day, Mamun Khaled’s lawyers filed a bail application. During the hearing, lawyer Morshed Hossain Shahin claimed the accused was innocent and sought bail. He told the court that the accused is a humble, honest, and education-loving person who has been framed as a suspect in this case.
Apart from his name, no other details are mentioned in the case allegations. He claimed the case is completely baseless and that the accused is being socially, politically, and familially humiliated through this case. He noted that the accused was remanded for a long period, but the state is dissatisfied because they did not get the information they wanted from him.
At that point, another lawyer from his side, Nazrul Islam Pakhi, continued speaking in court. At one stage, he made some false statements about Sheikh Mamun Khaled. Hearing this, Mamun Khaled became angry. He then scolded the lawyer, saying, “You talk too much.”
Later, with the court’s permission, Mamun Khaled said, “I had no work besides my academic life. I was not involved in any political activities. I taught at BUP. I took classes day and night. I always worked on academics. I am applying for bail.”
Subsequently, the court rejected his bail application and ordered him sent to jail. After the court proceedings ended, as Mamun Khaled was being taken down, the lawyer apologised to him.
On Monday, police produced Mamun Khaled in court after the completion of his fifth phase of remand in two cases. He was arrested on the night of 25 March.
On 7 December 2022, a case was filed over the attack on BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan and the killing of party activist Mokbul. The case, which named Sheikh Hasina and 256 others, was filed on 30 September 2024, at Paltan Model Police Station by a man named Mahfuzar Rahman.
