A Dhaka court has ordered that Ajay Kar Khokon, former general secretary of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), be shown arrested in an attempted murder case filed with Gulshan Police Station.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order after a hearing on Tuesday. Siddhartha Mondal, sub-inspector of Gulshan Police Station and investigation officer of the case, filed the petition to the court to show him arrested.
State Counsel Muhammad Shamsuzzoha Suman told the court the accused should be shown arrested to ensure a proper investigation.
Defence lawyer Obaidul Islam, however, argued that although his client was once involved with the BCL and Awami League, he had never committed any wrongdoing and had no prior criminal record.
Addressing the court with permission, Ajay Kar said he served as BCL general secretary 28 years ago and has held no political office for the past 15 and a half years.
According to the case statement, police reportedly opened fire on crowds during a protest at Natun Bazar under Bhatara Police Station on 4 August 2024.
Around 1:30pm, victim Touhid Mia was crossing the road in Natun Bazar when he was struck by bullets in the head and other parts of his body. He later filed the attempted murder case on 8 August 2025.
Detective Branch (DB) police arrested Ajay Kar from Gulshan on the night of 23 September 2024. He was sent to jail the following day after being shown arrested in another case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act and has remained in custody since.
