The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has stepped up efforts to clear illegal encroachments from the city’s footpaths and roads, warning that those who do not comply will face legal action through mobile courts starting 1 April.
In a public notice issued on Monday, the DMP warned business owners and establishments against occupying public spaces outside their premises.
According to the notice, many shops, restaurants, hotels, workshops, and other businesses are illegally using footpaths and roads to store goods, causing serious disruptions to pedestrian movement and exacerbating traffic congestion.
In some cases, activities such as vehicle repairs and merchandise display are also taking place on the footpaths, further obstructing the public space.
The DMP has directed all concerned business owners and establishments to immediately remove any goods or materials blocking footpaths and roads.
The notice emphasised that failure to comply will result in legal action, with mobile courts set to be conducted by special magistrates starting from 1 April, 2026.
The DMP has called on Dhaka residents to cooperate in maintaining clear footpaths and roads for public use and ensuring smooth traffic flow across the city.
