At least 153 people, including children, were killed when missiles struck a girls’ school in southern Iran, according to Iranian authorities, who blamed the United States and Israel.
The attack occurred in Minab, near an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) base that has been targeted before, BBC reports.
Emergency teams were dispatched to the school, which officials said was hit by three missiles about 600 meters from the IRGC base.
Videos verified by the BBC showed smoke rising from a damaged building as panicked crowds gathered, though the death toll has not been independently confirmed due to restrictions on foreign media in Iran.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the strike as a “barbaric act,” while US Central Command said it was reviewing reports and emphasized efforts to protect civilians. Israel’s military stated it was unaware of operations in the area.
Public reaction in Iran was marked by anger, with some blaming foreign powers and others criticizing domestic authorities for failing to provide air raid warnings, shelters, or internet access.
The incident comes amid ongoing US and Israeli strikes on Iranian cities following the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several senior commanders, escalating tensions across the Middle East.
