A brutal double killing of a grandmother and her granddaughter has sent shockwaves through Ishwardi. Police have filed a case naming unknown individuals as suspects and have arrested two men in connection with the crime.
The deceased grandmother, Sufia Begum, and her granddaughter, Jamila Akter, were found dead in their home and nearby mustard fields respectively. Jamila, a tenth-grade student at Kalikapur Dakhil Madrasa, was also a hafiza. Both lived in the same household, which had no adult male present at the time.
The case was filed late Saturday night by Sufia Begum’s daughter, Marzina Khatun, at Ishwardi Police Station. “The suspects are unknown at this stage, and the investigation has been handed over to the district Detective Branch due to the sensitive nature of the case,” said Officer-in-Charge Md Mominuzzaman.
Police arrested Rabbi Mondal, son of Nurul Mondal, and Shariful Islam, son of Mofejjal Hossain, on suspicion of involvement. “They are in custody, being interrogated, and initial inquiries suggest a link to the murders. The case is expected to be solved soon,” the OC added.
According to local residents, cries were heard from the house in Bhabanipur Uttarpara after midnight on Friday. When the sounds abruptly stopped, neighbours returned to their homes. The following morning, Sufia Begum’s bloodied body was found in the courtyard, while Jamila’s body was discovered naked in a nearby mustard field. The victims’ bodies were sent to Pabna General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The incident drew the attention of senior police officials, including Additional DIG of Rajshahi Range, Khandakar Md Shamim Hossain, and Pabna SP Anwar Zahid, who visited the site and assured rapid investigation and arrests.
The International Centre for Human Rights Protection and Dispute Resolution, along with Tanvir Ahmed Deep, central committee director-2, visited the scene on Saturday night.
They condemned the killings and demanded exemplary punishment for the perpetrators. “Such heinous acts are unacceptable. The authorities must act swiftly to solve the case and bring justice, ensuring the public’s confidence in the law,” Deep said.
The visit included other leaders of the organisation and local student and human rights activists, who urged the police to prevent any recurrence of such violence.
