Heavy rain forced the ICC T20 World Cup Super Eights match between Pakistan and New Zealand to be called off in Colombo.
The game was set for the R. Premadasa Stadium. But not a single ball was bowled. Rain stayed over the ground and did not stop.
Match referee Richie Richardson called off the match at 9:07 pm local time. The rain had already delayed the start. Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha had won the toss and chose to bat. Soon after, the rain became strong and steady.
Both teams now take one point each from the match. The group table stays tight. The effect on the race for the semi finals will be clear later in the stage.
Pakistan will face England in Pallekele on Wednesday, February 24. New Zealand will play co hosts Sri Lanka the next day.
The weather forecast for Colombo was poor from the start. Rain was expected through the day. Thunderstorms were also likely in the afternoon and evening.
There is no reserve day for this match. A washout can hurt the chances of reaching the last four. Officials can allow up to 90 extra minutes on the same day to try for a result if the match starts late.
