President Donald Trump has announced that a significant United States naval “armada” is currently moving toward the Gulf region, emphasizing that Washington remains vigilant regarding Iran’s activities.
Speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One while returning from the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Trump confirmed the deployment of a “big force” but expressed hope that a military confrontation could be avoided, reports Al Jazeera.
The deployment includes a massive flotilla and an aircraft carrier strike group, which officials indicate will reach the Middle East in the coming days.
Reports suggest that the USS Abraham Lincoln and its accompanying vessels were instructed to divert from their previous maneuvers in the South China Sea to reinforce the US presence in the Gulf.
Trump noted that the ships are being sent “just in case” to ensure the US is prepared for any developments. This latest military buildup follows a period of intense rhetoric.
Trump previously threatened military action against Tehran but appeared to soften his stance last week after reportedly receiving assurances that Iran would not execute protesters.
The President claimed his earlier threats had successfully prevented the execution of over 800 individuals, though Iranian authorities have denied having plans to execute participants of the anti-government protests that began in late 2024. According to Iranian state media, those protests resulted in over 3,100 deaths.
While Trump indicated an openness to dialogue with Iranian leadership, he issued a stern warning regarding the country’s nuclear ambitions.
He stated that the US would react if Tehran resumed its nuclear program, referencing the US airstrikes conducted against Iranian nuclear sites in June 2025 during Washington’s involvement in a 12-day conflict alongside Israel.
In response to the US maneuvers, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Tehran is prepared to retaliate with full force. Writing for the Wall Street Journal, Araghchi stated that the Iranian military would “fire back with everything we have” if attacked. He cautioned that an all-out war would be “ferocious,” would last significantly longer than Western projections, and would likely destabilize the entire region.
