Miscreants stabbed a man to death in Fukura area under Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj on Wednesday evening.
The deceased was Mokhles Molla, 43, said Kashiani Police Station’s Officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman.
Eyewitnesses said Mokhles left Tarail Bazar for home with his neighbour Sakib. When they reached Nazir Kazi Mor, four to five miscreants intercepted them and launched an attack.
While Sakib managed to flee, the attackers injured Mokhles with sharp weapons and left him there.
Hearing his screams, locals rushed in and rescued him in critical condition. When they took him to the 250-bed General Hospital in Gopalganj around 8pm, physicians declared him dead.
OC Mahfuzur Rahman said, “It is assumed that this killing might have occurred over a land-related dispute. However, no written complaint has yet been received from the victim’s family members. If a written complaint is received, legal measures will be taken promptly and the actual culprits will be brought under arrest.”
He further said, “Even without a formal complaint, the police have launched an operation to arrest those involved in the incident and it is ongoing.”
The body was kept in the hospital morgue. It will be handed over to the family after autopsy, the OC added.
