A local leader of the Jatiyatabadi Matsyajibi Dal was killed in Jhenaidah after being attacked with a sharp weapon by his younger brother on Sunday afternoon.

The victim, Sohel Rana, 42, was president of the Ganna Union unit of the BNP affiliated organisation and the son of Shafi Uddin of Betai Purbapara in Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila.

Shamsuzzoha, inspector (operations) of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, confirmed the incident and said police were sent to the spot after learning that Sohel had been hacked by his younger brother, Sabbir Ahmed, also known as Juel.

Preparations were underway to send the body to the morgue for post-mortem examination.

Neighbour Rubel Musalli said Juel had returned home two months ago from Saudi Arabia, where he had been working. While abroad, he used to send money home, which led to disagreements with his elder brother Sohel over financial matters.

On Sunday, the feud reportedly escalated during an argument over dividing firewood. At one point, Sohel threw a kitchen cleaver at Juel, injuring his leg. Juel then allegedly took the same cleaver and struck Sohel on the neck.

Family members rushed Sohel to Imperial Hospital in Jhenaidah, where doctors declared him dead. His body was later brought back home.

Shahnewaz Suman, member secretary of the Jhenaidah district unit of the Matsyajibi Dal, confirmed Sohel’s organisational role and demanded justice for the killing.

Additional Superintendent of Police for Jhenaidah Sadar Circle, Mahfuz Hossain, said an investigation is underway and further details will be known after the inquiry.
