Officials of four state-run banks on Sunday staged a demonstration in the capital’s Motijheel area protesting “promotion disparities” in the banks.
Several hundred officials from Sonali, Rupali, Janata, and Agrani banks joined the demonstration and took part in a rally.
They urged the Chief Adviser, the Finance Adviser, and the Financial Institutions Division of the Finance Ministry to intervene and resolve the issue. The protesters also presented a three-point demand to eliminate “disparities” in the banking sector.
According to the protesters, in 2024, thousands of promotions were granted in state-owned commercial banks. However, no measures were taken to address the serious disparities faced by officials deprived of promotion due to post abolishment and discriminatory policies.
Again in 2025, instead of resolving the actual disparities, the Financial Institutions Division issued a directive, depriving the affected officials of promotion. As a result, promotion activities in state-owned banks have not yet begun.
The rally was led by senior officials including Mohammad Anisur Rahman and Julkar Nayen of Janata Bank, Shahin Kader and Farzana of Agrani Bank, and AKM Maksud and Arafat Hossain of Sonali Bank.
