At least 72 people have been arrested across Bangladesh following incidents of vandalism, looting, and attacks on businesses during recent student-led protests against Israeli aggression in Palestine.
According to a statement posted on the official Facebook page of the Chief Adviser’s Office on Wednesday (9 April), a total of 10 cases have been filed so far, with more under preparation as investigations continue.
The protests, held on Monday (7 April) in solidarity with Palestine, turned violent in several areas as groups allegedly took advantage of the demonstrations.
Reports indicate that in cities including Sylhet, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bogura, and others, attackers targeted commercial establishments such as KFC, Pizza Hut, and Bata showrooms, causing extensive damage and theft.
In a government statement issued the following day (8 April), authorities confirmed that police launched raids across multiple locations on Monday night, resulting in the arrest of 42 suspects.
The statement further noted that law enforcement agencies are reviewing video footage from the protests to identify and apprehend others involved. “The operation will continue until all offenders are brought to justice,” it added.
Citizens have been encouraged to share any helpful information to support the investigation. “With collective efforts, we will hold accountable those who seek to disrupt peace and stability,” the statement said.
The government reiterated its support for peaceful protest but warned that violence and criminal activity under the guise of activism would not be tolerated.
