Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have recovered $51,000 concealed in a grass sack being transported on a bicycle, allegedly for smuggling into India.

The arrest was made on Friday in Anandapur border area of Mujibnagar upazila. The detained individual, Jahangir Sheikh, was sent to jail on Saturday following a court order.

Lt Col Md Nazmul Hasan, commanding officer of Chuadanga BGB Battalion-6, stated that acting on intelligence, they intercepted the suspect in Fashitla area.

“Naik Subedar Harun-ur-Rashid of Anandapur BGB camp noticed a man cycling with a suspicious grass sack in a restricted zone. When challenged, the suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended after a chase,” said Lt Col Hasan.

A thorough search revealed five bundles of US currency notes wrapped in black tape and hidden within the grass. Authorities also confiscated the bicycle and a button-style mobile phone.

During preliminary interrogation, Jahangir reportedly confessed the money was destined for India.

Local Union Parishad member Omar Faruk suggested Jahangir was merely a courier who might have been paid Tk 20,000 for the job. “The actual masterminds remain at large, often shielded by powerful quarters. Many such cases lose momentum due to weak investigations,” he observed.

The seized cash has been deposited with Meherpur Treasury as per court directives, while legal proceedings continue.
