A court in Mymensingh on Sunday sentenced five people to life imprisonment for the killing of a farmer in 2012.
Additional Sessions Judge Md Samsuddin delivered the verdict. The convicts Shukkur Ali, Harez Ali, Amir Ali, Jamir Ali, and Hatem Ali are all residents of Haluaghat upazila in the district.
The court also fined each of them Tk1 lakh, with an additional one-year jail term in default of payment.
According to the prosecution, the incident stemmed from a land dispute between farmer Ahmed Ali of Mokamia village and Shukkur Ali. On 14 October, 2012, a group of 20–25 people led by Shukkur allegedly entered a paddy field owned by Ahmed’s wife, Nurunnahar, and forcibly took away harvested crops.
When Ahmed and his family members resisted, they were attacked with sharp weapons. At least five people, including Ahmed, his wife, Nurunnahar’s maternal uncle Habibur Rahman, and grandmother Sufia, were injured in the assault. The attackers also looted valuables, including cash, from Nurunnahar’s house.
All the injured were taken to Haluaghat Upazila Health Complex, where Habibur Rahman died ten days later.
Following the incident, Nurunnahar filed a case with Haluaghat Police Station against 25 people, including the main accused. After reviewing evidence and witness testimonies, the court acquitted 20 of the accused due to lack of proof.
