The 44th annual National Rabindra Sangeet Conference will begin on Friday at the National Theatre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), running over two days on April 10 and 11. The selection round of the National Rabindra Sangeet Competition will take place on April 9.
More than 700 artists, cultural workers and organisers from across the country are expected to attend, according to Lily Islam, General Secretary of the Council.
Essayist Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury will inaugurate the conference, with theatre personality Ferdousi Majumder attending as chief guest.
Prof Dr Syed Md Akram Hossain will receive the prestigious Rabindra Padak for his contributions to music and culture.
The main event will open at 10:00 am on April 10 with the Bodhon song ‘Ami Marer Sagor Pari Debo’, followed by the final competition in the youth and general categories at 10:40 am.
Evening sessions will feature music, dance, recitation, and a special performance of Nazrul Geeti. A seminar on “Institutional Education and Music in Schools” is scheduled for April 11 at 11:30 am, with participation from Prof Kristi Hefaz, Prof Santosh Kumar Dhali, Ferdous Ara Lipi and Swatantra Bulbul.
A collection of essays, ‘Sangeet Sanskriti’, will be published for the session, showcasing writings on Rabindranath Tagore’s creative legacy. The Council highlighted the importance of Rabindra Sangeet in fostering cultural awareness, harmony and human values.
Established in 1979 in memory of artist Zahidur Rahim, the organisation now has 82 active branches and continues to play a central role in promoting Rabindra Sangeet and cultural development across Bangladesh.
