Police have arrested 30 people in eight cases filed over the unrest in the garment industry in Savar and Ashulia, while several more cases are in the process of being filed, officials said on Thursday.
The arrests were made on allegations of instigating violence during workers’ protests, Dhaka District Superintendent of Police (SP) Shamima Parveen told reporters.
Of the eight cases, two were filed with Savar Model Police Station and six with Ashulia Police Station, she said, adding that police were conducting drives to arrest the remaining accused.
The SP disclosed the information after visiting Al-Muslim Garments in Savar on Thursday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mustafizur Rahman said the situation in the industrial areas remained largely normal on Thursday, with no major incidents reported.
“Only a few minor incidents took place in Ashulia. The situation is gradually returning to normal,” he told reporters in Savar.
He also claimed that garment workers were no longer actively involved in the protests, alleging that some “fascists” had joined the movement.
Shamima Parveen said the officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station had been injured in an attack by workers and was receiving treatment.
A police vehicle was also set on fire during the unrest, she said, alleging that outsiders and miscreants were behind the incidents.
Police are investigating the incidents and continuing operations to arrest those involved, she added.
