Pakistani security forces on Sunday carried out a ground assault along the Afghan frontier, followed by “calibrated strikes” on militant hideouts, killing 29 fighters, officials said.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar wrote on X that the operation was in response to a wave of militant attacks nationwide. Kabul has yet to issue a reaction, reports AP.
Pakistan has faced a surge in violence against police and security forces in recent years, blamed on Tehrik‑e‑Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and allied groups.
The raid came a day after gunmen armed with explosives stormed the Rangers’ regional headquarters in Karachi, killing three soldiers. Security forces shot dead three attackers and captured another, identified by the military as an Afghan national.
Jamaat‑ul‑Ahrar, a splinter faction of the TTP, claimed responsibility for the Karachi assault.
Tarar said the latest border operation targeted TTP hideouts. The group is distinct from but allied with the Afghan Taliban, who retook power in Kabul in 2021.
Analysts warn the new strikes could deepen already strained ties between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
