13 AL activists arrested in Dhaka over staging processions

Detective Police (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested 13 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations in connection with unauthorised flash processions and political activities.

Among those arrested is ASM Al Sonet, former organisational secretary of Dhaka University’s SM Hall unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and president of the central committee of Muktijuddho Mancha.

They were arrested during raids conducted across various areas of Dhaka in the last 24 hours, according to Muhammad Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Division of DMP.

Meanwhile, the interim government on 12 May banned all activities of the Awami League and its associated and affiliated organisations, on allegations of killings, genocide, crimes against humanity, and other grave offences during the July uprising.

Akash, 25, active BCL activist; Md Mursalin Talukder, 34, legal affairs secretary, Awami League, Dhaka South; Md Ripon, 38, active Awami League worker; Muhammad Anisur Rahman, 57, member, Central Executive Committee, Awami League; Md Mahbubul Islam, 34, former president, BCL Amtali Upazila; Member, Amtali Upazila Awami League, Barguna; Nusrat Jahan Lima, 46, president, Mahila Awami League, Amtali Upazila; member, Amtali Upazila Awami League;

Md. Belal Hossain Tuhin, 29, former Vice-President, Lalbagh Thana BCL; Md Arshad Ali Biswas, 57, president, Manikganj Municipality Awami League; Abhimunno Biswas Abhi, 35, former vice-president, Titumir College BCL Unit.

Legal proceedings against the arrestees are currently underway, the DMP said in a statement.
