At least 10 people were injured in separate incidents of clashes between different political parties in Rangpur during the 13th parliamentary election on Thursday.
The clashes involved activists of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, the National Citizen Party (NCP), and the Jatiya Party.
In addition, law enforcers detained one person from a polling centre on charges of attempting to cast fake votes.
A scuffle took place between BNP and NCP activists at the Char Tambul polling centre in Tambulpur union of Pirgachha. The clash erupted when Ward BNP President Tofayel Hossain and activist Utsab Sarkar attacked NCP supporters with sticks, injuring several activists from both sides.
Meanwhile, at the Damruchakla Dewan Saleh Ahmad Dakhil Madrasa centre in Itakumari union, a tense situation arose after an altercation between Shamim, a member of the NCP election management committee, and Mehrab Hridoy, son of Jatiya Party’s upazila general secretary Abdur Rashid.
Elsewhere, a clash broke out over influence at the Notabari Dwi-Mukhi High School centre in Pirgachha, while in the Rangpur-2 constituency, clashes occurred in front of the Moubhasha Government Primary School centre between Jamaat activists and BNP leaders Laju and Polton over allegations of vote-buying with money.
Army personnel detained a BNP activist accused of attempting to cast fake votes at the Shahidbagh Government Primary School centre in Kaunia.
DIG (Rangpur Range) Aminul Islam said several isolated incidents had taken place in Rangpur, but they were immediately brought under control.
