BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman yesterday described former president Ziaur Rahman as “a symbol of democracy” who devoted his life to establishing democratic values in Bangladesh.
Speaking at a prayer gathering in East London organised by the UK unit of BNP to mark Ziaur Rahman’s 44th martyrdom anniversary, Tarique stated, “President Ziaur Rahman was not just a person; he was a symbol of democracy.”
“He devoted his life to ensure democratic rights. Today, as we commemorate his martyrdom, we pray not only for him, but also for all martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of democracy,” he added.
The event, held after Maghrib prayers, saw strong participation from UK-based BNP leaders, activists, and expatriate Bangladeshis. Attendees offered special prayers for the late president, victims of the 2024 July uprising, and all who sacrificed their lives for democratic rights in Bangladesh.
Ziaur Rahman, a sector commander of the 1971 Liberation War who led the “Z Force,” was assassinated on May 30, 1981 by rogue army officers at Chittagong Circuit House.
The London event honoured his legacy as both a freedom fighter and a champion of democratic governance.
