A youth was shot dead and three others were injured in an attack by unidentified assailants in Khulna city on Wednesday evening.
The incident took place around 6pm in the 80 Bigha area of Labanchara under Harintana Police Station.
The deceased was identified as Manjurul, a resident of the Labanchara area and son of Khokon.
According to police and local residents, Manjurul was in the Ashibigha area when a group of assailants opened fire on him before fleeing.
He was critically injured in the shooting and was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Three other people were also injured after the attackers allegedly hacked them during the incident.
They were taken to hospital for treatment.
Labanchara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Syed Mosharraf Hossain said a football match is regularly held at an open field in Ashibigha.
“Preliminary information suggests that the attack may have been triggered by a dispute over the football match,” he said
Police are investigating the incident to establish the exact motive and identify those responsible, the officer added.
