A young man was hacked to death in Kabirhat upazila of Noakhali, triggering a scuffle between two groups in front of the local police station on Thursday morning.
Police have taken three people into custody in connection with the incident.
The clash unfolded hours after 22-year-old Anwar Hossain Sabbir was fatally attacked on Wednesday evening. Police later arrested two suspects — Abdus Sobhan Shamim, 30, and his wife Farhana Akter, 23 — both residents of Pan Bepari Bari in Dhanshalik Union.
Kabirhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shahin Mia said the attack took place around 7:30pm at Pan Bepari Bari in Char Gullyakhala village. Sabbir died around 2am while being taken to Dhaka in critical condition.
Sabbir, son of Md Liton of Rameshpur village under Ward 8 of Chaprashirhat Union, had gone to the house with his friend Anwar Hossain Shakil after responding to a call for help.
According to Shakil, a long-running family dispute had escalated earlier in the day when Shamim was caught cutting chilli saplings and allegedly assaulted his sister-in-law Manowara Begum.
Shakil said he and Sabbir took the injured Manowara to hospital but were confronted by Shamim on their way back. During the altercation, Shamim allegedly struck Sabbir on the head with a locally made sharp weapon.
Locals rushed the injured youth to Kabirhat Upazila Health Complex, from where he was referred to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital. He died while being transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
OC Shahin Mia said the killing stemmed from a family conflict. “A drive is underway to arrest the remaining accused. Details will be known after the investigation,” he said.
