BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Sunday questioned the apparent failure of law enforcement agencies to arrest those responsible for a series of violent incidents across the country, saying continued inaction could undermine public trust.
“Earlier, criminals could be identified and arrested within a few days after committing crimes. That is no longer happening,” Rizvi said while visiting the fire-ravaged home of BNP leader Belal Hossain in Char Monsha village of Bhabaniganj, Lakshmipur, around 10pm.
Leading a BNP delegation, Rizvi inspected the damaged house and inquired about the condition of Belal’s family. He also paid respects at the grave of Belal’s daughter, Ayesha Akter, who died in the fire.
Addressing the police administration, Rizvi urged greater vigilance. “You must be more active; otherwise people will become suspicious. If miscreants escape due to inaction, darkness will descend upon society,” he said.
On behalf of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and as chief patron of the party initiative Amra BNP Poribar, Rizvi expressed condolences to Belal’s wife, Najma Begum, and handed over Tk4 lakh as medical assistance.
Rizvi alleged that the killing of a man identified as Hadi and the arson attack on Belal’s house were linked. “These incidents stem from the same source. Someone is orchestrating them, possibly a political leader or an influential individual, because they do not want an election to be held,” he claimed.
BNP Joint Secretary General and District BNP Convener Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie was also present during the visit.
Earlier in the day, the BNP delegation visited Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital to see Belal Hossain, who was injured in the incident.
