Bernardo Silva says he never hesitated when Real Madrid offered him the chance to join the club, describing the move as “impossible to say no” after completing his first training session at Valdebebas on Tuesday.
The Portugal international officially started life as a Madrid player this week and said the club’s history and winning culture convinced him immediately.
“It is very special, and I am very happy to be here,” Silva told Realmadrid TV. “Talking about this club is unnecessary because its history speaks for itself. I am here to help this team keep winning because that is what Real Madrid knows how to do, win, win and win.”
Silva admitted his opening session under José Mourinho tested him physically, but he quickly settled into his new surroundings.
“The first training session was tough, but I am very happy to meet everyone and my new team-mates. I already knew some of them from playing against them over the years, but now being on the same side is a great feeling. Everyone is working with great intensity, and honestly, this place already feels like home.”
The 31-year-old also welcomed the chance to work with Mourinho for the first time.
“We have been rivals before, and now we are together. Mourinho has meant so much to Portuguese football. Growing up, we watched his teams, and he always put Portugal on the world stage. I am looking forward to learning from him.”
Silva also stressed that he values the team above individual recognition.
“I am a team player and a hard worker. I always try to make the players around me better. I can play in different positions, and I will always be ready to do whatever Real Madrid needs.”
He said facing Madrid as an opponent had already shown him the scale of the club.
“Having played against Real Madrid many times, you understand how enormous this club is. Playing at the Santiago Bernabéu is a unique experience because of its atmosphere and history.”
Silva then explained why accepting Madrid’s offer required no debate.
“When Real Madrid came calling, it was impossible to say no. I didn’t think twice.”
He added that living closer to his family in Portugal also appealed, although representing Real Madrid remained the main reason behind the move.
“Being close to my family and in a culture similar to Portugal certainly helps. But playing for the greatest club in football history, as its trophies prove, is a privilege. I am very happy.”
Silva also named Zinedine Zidane, Rui Costa and Luka Modrić as football figures who shaped his career.
“Zidane is undoubtedly one of my biggest references. When I was young, I admired the way he controlled the ball and played the game. He is one of the five greatest players in football history. Modrić has also been a huge inspiration, and every conversation I have had with him has shown what a great person he is.”
