Vinicius Junior has spoken publicly for the first time since speculation over his Real Madrid future intensified, although the Brazilian forward avoided discussing reports linking him with a move to Arsenal.
The 26-year-old instead focused on Real Madrid’s pre-season preparations under new head coach Jose Mourinho after completing the second day of training.
“Everything has gone very well. I am getting to know the new coach and the new players, and we are working very hard,” Vinicius told Real Madrid TV.
“Mourinho wants me to stay the same as always, happy, energetic and playing my natural football.”
Speculation over Vinicius’ future has grown during the summer transfer window. Reports in Spain and England have claimed contract negotiations with Real Madrid remain ongoing, while Arsenal have reportedly explored the possibility of signing the Brazil international. Vinicius’ representatives have already dismissed suggestions that a move is close.
The forward’s current contract has only one year remaining, increasing attention on negotiations over a new deal. Real Madrid would risk losing one of their biggest stars without a transfer fee next year if an agreement is not reached.
Despite the uncertainty, Vinicius insisted his focus remains on preparing for the new campaign.
“We have to prepare ourselves physically so that we suffer fewer injuries throughout the season and have everyone available.”
“Today’s training was very good. We all left the pitch very tired, but now it is time to recover because we train again on Wednesday. That is what pre-season is all about, and we have to be ready.”
Vinicius enters the new season after a busy summer with Brazil at the FIFA World Cup. Although Brazil exited in the last 16, he finished as the Selecao’s leading scorer with four goals.
The Brazilian has also built an impressive record at Real Madrid, contributing 128 goals and 100 assists during his time at the club.
