Van driver beaten to death in Rajshahi

A van driver was was allegedly beaten to death during a confrontation over a minor issue in Mohanpur upazila, Rajshahi, on Friday morning.

The victim, Alam Ali, 43, son of Md Ashraf, was a resident of Belgachhi village in the upazila.

The incident occurred around 8:30am in front of Pathak Club in East Para area of Belgachhi. Local sources said that Mojibur Rahman, the accused, signalled Alam’s van to stop. When the driver stopped a short distance away, Mojibur reportedly became angry and attacked on the back of the head with a brick.

Critically injured Alam was taken to Mohanpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Locals detained the accused at Pathak Club. However, when the police arrived to take him into custody, a furious crowd attempted to physically assault him.

In the ensuing chaos, Assistant Sub-Inspector Belal Uddin and another police officer suffered minor injuries while attempting to restore order.

To prevent further violence, additional police forces were dispatched to the area.

According to SI Modasser Hossain Khan, the second officer of Mohanpur Police Station, legal action is underway, with authorities investigating the incident following complaints filed by locals.
