The consular affairs division of the Department of State has cautioned that the US government strongly discourage ‘birth tourism’ and consular officers have the right to deny US visa if they sniff it.
A Facebook post of the US embassy in Dhaka says ” Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have US citizenship is not permitted.” Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intend, it added.
Birth tourism, the practice of traveling to the United States to give birth and secure American citizenship for a child, has been a well-known phenomenon for decades.
This practice, especially prevalent in border communities, allows foreign nationals to take advantage of the US birthright citizenship provision, which grants automatic citizenship to any child born on American soil.
However, the Trump administration has made efforts to put an end to this practice, prompting US consulates around the world to warn visa applicants about the possibility of having their visas denied if they are suspected of attempting to engage in birth tourism.
