US President Donald Trump has assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the US will be involved in providing security guarantees for the country as part of any peace deal with Russia, adding that a ceasefire is not needed to negotiate ending the conflict.
He made the comment on Monday while holding Ukraine talks with Zelenskyy at the White House, reports CNN. Zelenskyy is accompanied by a delegation of top European leaders. Who at that time waited in another room.
“European countries are the first line of defence because they are there. We are going to help them out as well. We will be involved,” Trump said from the Oval Office. He added that Russian President Vladimir Putin is expecting his call after the talks.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy signaled his support for a meeting with the US and Russian leaders. He added that Ukrainians support Trump’s plans to end the war in a “diplomatic way.”
