Police have filed an unnatural death (UD) case four days after nine workers died after being exposed to toxic gas at a shipbreaking yard in Sitakunda’s Bhatiari.
The case was filed at Sitakunda Model Police Station on Monday, as none of the victims’ families or other affected workers came forward to lodge a complaint, police said.
Sitakunda Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mohinul Islam said no family member of the deceased workers had approached the police following the incident.
“As no one came to file a case, police registered an accidental death case,” he said.
Further legal action will be taken after the forensic examination and investigation reports are received, the OC added.
The incident occurred around 9am on 14 August at the Ferdous Steel Ship Recycling Yard in the Station Road area of Bhatiari.
The nine workers died after being exposed to toxic gas while cutting a scrapped vessel at the yard. Several other workers were also affected and were rescued and taken to hospital for treatment.
The accident has prompted investigations by several government agencies into safety measures at the shipbreaking yard and possible irregularities surrounding the incident.
