The UN General Assembly’s Third Committee on Wednesday adopted by consensus a resolution on Rohingya Muslims, calling for renewed global efforts toward a durable solution to the Rohingya crisis and the safe return of Rohingyas to Myanmar.
Jointly tabled by the OIC and the EU, the resolution was co-sponsored by 105 countries.
A press release issued by Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission in New York stated that this yearly resolution, adopted since 2017, expresses concern over continued human rights violations in Rakhine State, the targeting of Rohingya Muslims, restrictions on humanitarian access, and the ongoing influx of Rohingyas into Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries.
It also calls for sustained international engagement to ensure the safe and sustainable return of the Rohingyas to Myanmar.
While speaking after the adoption, the Bangladesh delegation thanked member states for their support but expressed disappointment that no tangible progress has been made in the past eight years toward the return of the Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar.
Bangladesh also called for urgent international action, stressing that it is no longer possible for the country to bear the burden of hosting 1.3 million Rohingyas.
