The upcoming Finalissima between world champions Argentina and European champions Spain faces uncertainty amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The war between Iran and the Israel–United States coalition shows no signs of abating, affecting sports across the region. UEFA, however, continues to plan for the match to go ahead in Qatar later this month.
Since hostilities began, Qatar has experienced multiple missile strikes from Iran. The match in Doha is set for 27 March, less than three weeks away, raising concerns over safety and logistics. UEFA stated on Thursday:
“At present, no alternative venue is being considered. A final decision is expected towards the end of next week.”
The Lusail Stadium, which hosted the 2022 World Cup final, is where Argentina and Spain will meet. Lionel Messi, who aims to lift another trophy, will lead the Argentine side. However, the regional conflict has introduced significant security and organisational challenges.
The Qatar Football Association has suspended all domestic tournaments and matches indefinitely. Argentina is also scheduled to play a friendly in Qatar on 31 March, adding further uncertainty to the football calendar.
UEFA confirmed that discussions with local organisers are ongoing to ensure the match proceeds safely:
“The local organisers are making every effort to ensure the match goes ahead successfully. If Doha is deemed too high-risk, the match could be relocated to Spain or another European venue where both teams can be accommodated.”
The inaugural Finalissima took place in London in June 2022. Argentina, as Copa America winners, won 3–0 against Italy in the contest.
